Possessive expectations

An angel came to me one day. I was extremely disturbed over some matter and was in dire need of some comfort and assurance that somebody is there for me.... and will always be there... She came upto me, wiped my tears and my doubts along with it, held my hand and told me something... Something which I think I should share with as many people as possible, for it is a lesson that could change your life forever... elementary as it may be... I just don't think that many of us realise its importance.

She told me to beware of evil... Evil came in many forms... but she warned me about possessiveness and expectations...

Don't be possessive about material objects, for they will leave you with the same ease as they came to you... And when they leave, you are hurting your feelings for no reason...

Don't be possessive about the people you love, give them some space to breathe... besides, if they ever leave you, it will hurt you more than it will hurt anybody else....

Don't be possessive about your dreams... you might need to sacrifice them every once in a while for the greater good of the people around you... that is probably a much better thing to do than living out the dream..

Don't be possessive about the life you live, it can be taken away as quickly as it was given to you..

But also beware of indifference.. Just because I asked you not to be possessive, it does not mean you become indifferent to everything around you. Don't become indifferent to the objects that you can actually protect. Don't become indifferent to the people who need you.. yes they need some space to breathe... but they also need your help every now and then.. they need some words of comfort... Don't become indifferent to the dreams that you didn't have to give up. Don't lose hope in the dreams that you did give up...

Life is about love and harmony. Life is about giving up some of your comforts so that people around you will be happy and will become better people. Don't expect anything in return.. even from your loved ones.. because thats where your problem arises. Thats the reason you get hurt ever so often. All because you expected someone to do something for you just because you did some good for them. If you did the deed with an expectation from the person, then it might have been better if you remained quiet. Do things for people because you want to, not because you might get something out of it... look at you now... you feel miserable just because you were possessive about that person... you would have done anything for that person.. out of love.. yet you sit here feeling sad because the person is gone and is not there to do something which you would have gladly done for that person... to wipe away you tears and your fears along with it ... a result of your possessiveness and expectations... think about it. Is your sadness that person's fault as you claim it to be or your own?

Then I realised... Just because I was less possessive about someone, didn't mean that I loved the person any less... It just meant that I was doing the both of us a favour... and doing stuff for people without expectations, can be a liberating experience... the angel came to me with these words years ago... some lessons just stay with you forever and are there for you whenever you need them....

I don't know if this post came out the way I wanted it to.. and I don't know if it expressed whatever I wanted to express. But this post was a sincere effort on my part to try and share a few lessons that i have learnt and which mean a lot to me..

Too true !!Anyone can be possessive but
//doing stuff for people without expectations, //
comes only to the thoughtful one and is sure liberating experience like u put it .It makes more sense when i connect my past and present and now that ur angels' message has reached me, i hope for a better future .You definitely shared more than just a lesson out there!!

I feel that this post came out just beautifully :D The things you said may seem like common sense but we all need to be reminded once in a while lest we become forgetful ;)

True. So true. Expectations are the root cause of disappointment. If it were only easy to let those expectations go...

i agree with bharathy and clueless.. it was more than a lesson. i think its more the root cause of life.. and we all seem to know that its wrong to expect but old fools that we are cant stop ourselves.. most of our lives is spend in trying ti relive the lesson!

the story of our lives eh? make the mistake, suffer, then repeat it. obviously, though life is a good teacher, we are terrible students
