Rap on the Head!

I got a
Heart full of pain
Head full of stress
Handful of anger
Held in my chest
Uphill struggle
Blood, sweat and tears
Nothing to gain
Everything to fear

Some of you must have identified where these lines come from. Yup! Its Linkin Park's "Nobody's Listening"! I was listening to that song today on my way to the lab and something struck me. The lyrics of most of their songs and certain other rap groups and all are pretty similar, aren't they? Talking about pain, struggle, anger, frustration and a few other such things. And we listen to it. In fact, we love these songs! Personally I love every Linkin Park song I've ever listened to! But only today it hit me that the songs are so full of anger, frustration and all. Sorta describing a struggle over a lost cause where there's nothing to gain. Then I thought of something else.

The chameleon in Dr.Dolittle 2! Remember? The one which had trouble changing colours? When Dolittle's daughter stomps out of the room all angry and pissed, the wise 'ol thing says

"So young, so angry, damn that rap music!"

I thought of Harry Potter too! The fifth book where we are introduced to Phineas Nigellus Black, the old headmaster of Hogwarts. Here's a scene in Dumbledore's office

"'I know how you are feeling, Harry,' said Dumbledore very quietly.'No, you don't,' said Harry, and his voice was suddenly loud and strong.....'You see, Dumbledore?' said Phineas Nigellus slyly. 'Never try to understand the students. They hate it. They would much rather be tragically misunderstood, wallow in self-pity, stew in their own- ''That's enough, Phineas,' said Dumbledore."

Which brings me back to what I started off since Phineas has so aptly described most of the rap music that we listen to and love!. I guess most teenagers love these songs full of anger coz they look at themselves as misunderstood rebels of sorts who have to carry the weight of the world on their shoulders!

And I guess we tend to forget that those whom we rebel against (in most cases- parents) understand us completely since they were also rebels once! Strange thing it is... adolescence... dontcha think so? /:)

Another strange thing.... this post coming from me!!! The biggest rebel ever! Ask my parents, they'll tell you :P :P

And damn those people for capitalizing on our teenage anger and frustration! ;)

Hee! I've noticed that too. There used to be a time when being emo and angsty used to be the "in" thing - but come to think about it, though we still like these songs, we can't really stand people like that anymore! Think Peter Parker and Clark Kent! :P

That said, Linkin Park rocks. They can write as many angsty, painful songs as they want, and I'll keep listening. \m/

Coming from a family of 6 children, no, I am not the most rebellious :p

To think you related that verse in the song to so many things! I would've never thought of all that haha!

a great many hands for my vote (yes, i actually have 7 frontal limbs, 5 hind limbs and 4 to spare)... but who doesn't like to bitch, scream, shower anger...
thou shalt know i am thine lord when i shower my vengeance upon thee

true, the metal brigade and pop culture is based on negetivity. but look at it- isn't tom n jerry? or the road runner? daffy? face it- WE LOVE VIOLENCE, PAIN and EVIL when its a safe mile away!

ALOHA! how y'doing? :D
and yes, i soooo agree with this post. almost every teen that you see loves to act angry, frustrated, misunderstood and basically be a puffed-up poppinjay (to use phineas nigellus' term :P). yeah, i was one of them. i gave the worst imaginable time to my parents, like most teens. i think parents of teens really know why some animals eat their young. :P however, isn't it amazing how parents forgive every mean word and accept you as you are? :D now that i am wiser and calmer than before, i think what every parent should do is put a wad of cotton wool in their ears whenever their teens shout and let them moan, groan, grump around for a few years. :P

Tom and jerry u say... interesting! I never looked at stuff that way! But i totally agree that we humans do have an attraction and a sorta fascination for violence, pain and sorrow.

Aloha! what happened to your blog???!!! Dont tell me u deleted it!!! Its great to see you around after such a long time :) And yeah, we sorta realise a bit late why certain animals eat their young :P Lucky us that our parents turn a deaf ear to our rebellion! Though that probably just ends up giving the teenager more to get frustrated about :P :P :P
